COURSE BACKGROUND

The purpose of this programmed is to equip you with knowledge and skills for successful entry into a secretarial position in the medical field. Medical secretaries perform administrative work in a clinical, hospital, or other medical environment. Tasks performed in this profession will include reception duties, answering phones, compiling medical records, correspondence with patients and medical aids, etc. The programmed integrates theoretical learning with practical skills. During the practical session of 18 months, these vital skills will be applied in the secretarial environment to build a successful career.

Medical Secretary opens  many opportunities for the graduate to partake in the world of health and temperate. The graduate in  Medical Secretary participates in saving the lives of the sick and giving them a better chance to stay fit and strong.

A medical secretary must enjoy the medical fraternity, be strong in administrative functions and build good relationships with doctors, nurses and professionals in the medical industry. With these traits you are well on your way to a career as a Medical Secretary. The course attracts students with a passion for medicine, administration and patient care. It will groom you to work as front office reception at hospitals, clinics and doctor’s rooms, and be a liaison with all medical aids and medical sales representatives, often providing order to the busy schedules of medical professionals.   • Relevant practical experience (18 months)

Description

Learners will receive the following at each level:

  • National Certificate N4, N5, N6
  • National N Diploma in Medical Secretary on completion of N4-N6 and 18-months of in-service training

The National N Diploma includes two (2) years of theory and 18-months of in-service training.

All examinations are set and administered by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The National N Diploma is issued by the DHET.

Office Practice

Office Practice provides secretarial students with the required knowledge of the secretarial career and with the practical skills in office procedures, to perform with self-confidence the functions attached to the post of secretary and eventually the post of management assistant.

Communication

Communication equips students with the necessary verbal and non-verbal communication knowledge (theoretical) and skills (practical) to function effectively.

Introductory Information Processing

Information Processing equips the student with the necessary skills to effectively capture relevant medical data, to effectively utilise computer skills, and to attain keying-in excellence. These skills help develop accuracy and speed for the successful operation of an office.

Grade 12 Certificate or related NCV Level 4 qualification

The National Certificate in Medical Secretary is made up of the following courses which are done over a period of 6/12/18 months.

National Certificate (N4-N6): Office Practice, Medical Practice, Communication, Information Processing.
Elective: Computer Practice, Public Administration, Financial Accounting, Introductory Accounting.
