Financial Management (N4 - N6)

Course Background

Once you complete this Financial Management (N4 – N6) program, you will be able to apply accounting and numeracy skills to enter an accounting occupation directly. You’ll understand accounting and management principles, acquire knowledge of accounting systems used by business enterprises, and handle all administrative accounting tasks. The program progresses through three levels, with each N level taking place over one semester. After each semester, students are eligible for a National Certificate on that level. It is recommended to continue through all three levels to qualify for the National Diploma, which requires 18 months of work at a financial institution.

Program Focus and Curriculum

The focus of the Financial Management (N4 – N6) program is on accounting. The curriculum emphasizes managing the financial affairs of organizations. Upon concluding their studies, students will have the ability to analyze financial and statistical information, check accounts, and provide financial advice. Furthermore, students will gain thorough knowledge of Pastel Accounting and Pastel Payroll packages.

Course Structure

First Year

First Semester: N4
  • Financial Accounting: Study basic accounting principles and contra accounts. Acquire skills to enter data from journal to general ledger, cashbook, and bank reconciliation. Different organizational bookkeeping, such as partnerships and corporations, will be covered.

  • Management Communication: Explore communication, motivation, and self-image within an organization. Practical activities include writing business communication documents and understanding advertising’s role in marketing strategies.

  • Computerized Financial Systems: Gain practical knowledge in using Pastel Accounting and Pastel Payroll.

  • Entrepreneurship and Business Management: Learn the fundamentals of starting a business, including how to draw up a business plan.

Second Semester: N5

  • Financial Accounting: Continue studying basic accounting principles and bookkeeping for various organizations.

  • Cost and Management Accounting: Report to management on the profitability of products or departments.

  • Computerized Financial Systems: Continue practical training in Pastel Accounting and Pastel Payroll.

  • Entrepreneurship and Business Management: Deepen your knowledge of business planning.

Second Year

First Semester: N6
  • Financial Accounting: Further develop skills in accounting principles and bookkeeping.

  • Cost and Management Accounting: Enhance your ability to report on business profitability.

  • Computerized Financial Systems: Continue your practical training in financial systems.

  • Income Tax: Understand different types of taxation and how to perform tax calculations.

Program Outcome

The Financial Management (N4 – N6) program equips students to follow the work ethic required in the financial sector. Graduates can make informed career choices based on their industry knowledge and provide valuable support roles. Additionally, they adhere to health and safety legislation, maintain productive interpersonal relations, and are proficient in computer literacy to effectively participate in financial management.

There is a big demand for accountants and bookkeepers in the job market. Financial Management graduates will have access to various clerical and administrative positions, Accounting office, Accountant for private and government departments, Private Accountant for private companies.

Grade 12 National Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification

Upon completion, certification will be issued from the Department of Higher Education & Training [DHET].

The National Diploma in Financial Management is made up of the following courses which are done over a period of 18 months.

National Certificate (N4): Financial Accounting, Management Communication, Computerized Financial Systems, Entrepreneurship & Business Management.

National Certificate (N5 + N6): Financial Accounting, Computerized Financial Systems, Entrepreneurship & Business Management, Cost & Management Accounting. Elective: Economics, Income Tax, Mercantile Law.
