COURSE BACKGROUND
Introduction to Chemical Engineering (N4-N6) at Greenview College
Chemical Engineering N4 – N6 combines physical sciences (physics and chemistry), life sciences (microbiology and biochemistry), applied mathematics, and economics to produce, transform, transport, and properly utilize chemicals, materials, and energy. This qualification offers both theoretical and practical knowledge, with the opportunity to earn a National Certificate or Diploma after 24 months of practical work.
The Importance of Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineering plays a crucial role in various sectors, such as food production, energy generation, clean water provision, sanitation, healthcare, and shelter. It also creates value-added commodities by utilizing chemical, biological, and physicochemical processes. However, by-products of these processes have sometimes resulted in significant environmental and human health damage.
Sustainable Practices in Chemical Engineering
At Greenview College, our training focuses on developing skills that reduce the negative ecological impacts of traditional chemical engineering practices. Our students are taught to minimize waste and use green, sustainable processes to close material cycles and create value from waste products. This approach aims to provide solutions that benefit both society and the environment.
Interdisciplinary Training and Research
Our program is interdisciplinary, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills that tackle societal challenges in South Africa, Africa, and the world. The Department of Chemical Engineering at Greenview College is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, and our experienced lecturers provide sustainable training to ensure graduates are well-prepared to contribute positively to global development.
